چکیده
Minimally invasive implantation of subdural electrodes can dramatically benefit the patients with various neurological diseases. In modern clinical practice, procedure electrode arrays remains traumatic for and increases postoperative infection risk. Here we report a design insertion technique thermally activated shape-memory polymer-based array that recover up to ten times length deformation. The compressed four-centimeter wide be easily packed into three-millimeter diameter tube subsequently deployed thought five-millimeter opening in restricted space between brain phantom simulated skull. mechanical properties developed are comparable materials traditionally employed purpose, electrical signal recording preserved after shape deformation recovery. Additionally, is biocompatible exhibits conformability curvy surface. results demonstrate through small hole similar cavity possible, which may inspire future solution minimal suffering from epilepsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or tetraplegia.

Modiolus-Hugging Intracochlear Electrode Array with Shape Memory Alloy
In the cochlear implant system, the distance between spiral ganglia and the electrodes within the volume of the scala tympani cavity significantly affects the efficiency of the electrical stimulation in terms of the threshold current level and spatial selectivity. Because the spiral ganglia are situated inside the modiolus, the central axis of the cochlea, it is desirable that the electrode arr...

متن کاملShape-Memory Polymer Composites
The development of shape-memory polymer composites (SMPCs) enables high recovery stress levels as well as novel functions such as electrical conductivity, magnetism, and biofunctionality. In this review chapter the substantial enhancement in mechanical properties of shape-memory polymers (SMPs) by incorporating small amounts of stiff fillers will be highlighted exemplarily for clay and polyhedr...
متن کاملA hybrid PDMS-Parylene subdural multi-electrode array.
In this paper, we report on a cost effective and simple method for fabricating a flexible multi-electrode array for subdural neural recording. The electrode was fabricated using a PDMS-Parylene bilayer to combine the major advantages of both materials. Mechanical and electrical characterizations were performed to confirm functionality of a 16-site electrode array under various flexed/bent condi...

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS To evaluate a transcanal approach for placement of a stimulating electrode array in the cochlear nerve. STUDY DESIGN Prospective cadaveric temporal bone study. METHODS Ten human cadaveric temporal bones were dissected. Both a facial recess approach with mastoidectomy and a transcanal approach using the novel technique were performed in each bone. A middle fossa dissect...
